"Stayed and just...enjoyed myself." Time for some tough reflection. 📺The context Roy Kent is an assistant coach on Apple TV's "Ted Lasso." In a recent episode he broke up with his girlfriend. In the next episode he traveled with the team as they faced Chelsea F.C.; that was the team that made him a star.
At the end of the episode Roy is asked how he felt going back to Chelsea and he replies, "sad." This was an interesting moment for a character who presents himself as tough and abrasive.
He explained that he left Chelsea F.C. because he knew he was at the end of his career and he didn't want to be one of those "broken down footballers taking up space."
👉Go deeper Before the episode ends Kent reflects more on the decision to leave Chelsea F.C. and wonders if he should have stayed and "just f-ing enjoyed myself."
The monologue is an obvious metaphor for his relationship with his ex-girlfriend; he broke it off before she could end it with him (maybe).
"That's just not who I am, I guess," Kent says. "Not yet," replies coach Lasso.
💡Connect the dots Roy, like some of us...no make that many of us...no make that all of us...have insecurities and fears. What shows on the outside isn't always what is going on inside.
What is so powerful about this clip is that it shows the power of talking to others about these insecurities and fears. Bonus - watch how Ted and reporter Trent Crimm listen.
Also, Roy realizes these insecurities and fears are robbing him of happiness.
📢My BIG Takeaway I need to take some time and reflect on what are my biggest insecurities and fears, talk to someone close about them, and think about how to get past them so I'm not letting them stand in the way of happiness coming into my life.
Question: How much more joy and happiness would I have in my life if I "just f-ing enjoyed myself?"
I already know the answer. It's time for me to act now.
🕖Bonus time Below is the clip that inspired this edition of The BIG Takeaway. (NSFW) Maybe watch it and just f-ing enjoy yourself.
