The context Marilyn Maye has been singing for over 80 years; she gives her first Carnegie Hall solo performance on Friday.
Maye was born in Kansas and has spent her life singing, smiling, and bringing joy to audiences across the country.
Known for doing kicks during her shows, she also does them when not performing "because it's fun."
Go deeper Maye sucks every ounce of joy and happiness that she possibly can from every moment, every day, every show.
She keeps going because it makes her happy. While she has had a great career (multiple appearances on "The Tonight Show," a Grammy nomination, recording over a dozen albums), she notes that "retirement has never been in her vocabulary."
She isn't looking back or ahead; she is embracing the now. When asked by The New York Times if she could have been a bigger star, her answer was a lesson for us all.
"I am 95 f-ing years old. I don’t have time to be a larger star. I don’t have time to be any more than this night.”
My BIG Takeaway I have to remind myself that it's not about getting to Carnegie Hall, it's embracing the journey along the way, even if that journey takes over 80 years.
